Documentary, fiction and animated films addressing these themes are shown free of charge in the Museum's Auditorium on several Sundays each month.
For the first year, MEG is joining forces with the university film club for a screening followed by a discussion.
For this year's edition, Haile Gerima's film Sankofa will be screened at the MEG.
Mona is an African-American model. She is sent to Cape Coast, Ghana, for a series of photo shoots. But while there, visiting the ruins of the port from which the ships carrying the slaves to the Americas set sail, she is taken ill and feels an inexplicable presence surrounding her. The spirits of the ancients take possession of her, and she finds herself transported to a plantation in the days of the slaves, where her master covets her beauty. Events force her to react and take control of her destiny.
Sankofa, a work that is both limpid and complex, is a radical affirmation that Black people are no longer the objects but the subjects of their own history. This is a recurring theme in Haile Gerima's work: to master his present, the Black man must master his past and his History. This is the meaning of "sankofa" in the Akan language: "We must go back and reclaim our past in order to move forward". So this is not just a historical film, but also a fundamental critique of neo-colonialism, subtly and masterfully directed.

Les ciné-dimanches du MEG continuent pour une saison autour de trois notions essentielles et actuelles: l'identité, le genre et la durabilité.
Des films documentaires, des fictions et des films d'animation abordant ces thématiques sont projetés gratuitement dans l'Auditorium du Musée plusieurs dimanches par mois.
Pour la première année, le MEG s'associe au Ciné-club universitaire pour une projection.
Pour cette édition, le film Sankofa, de Haile Gerima est projeté au MEG.
Mona est mannequin, elle est aussi afro-américaine. Elle est envoyée au Ghana, à Cape Coast, pour une série de prises de vue. Mais, sur place, alors qu’elle visite les ruines du port d’où partaient les navires convoyant les esclaves vers les Amériques, elle est prise de malaises et sent une présence inexplicable qui l’entoure. Les esprits des anciens prennent possession d’elle et elle se trouve transportée dans une plantation au temps des esclaves, où son maître convoite sa beauté. Les événements la pousseront à réagir et à prendre son destin en main.
Sankofa, œuvre à la fois limpide et complexe, est une affirmation radicale du Noir non plus objet mais sujet de son Histoire. Il s’agit là d’un thème récurrent dans l’œuvre de Hailé Gerima: pour maîtriser son présent, le Noir doit maîtriser son passé et son Histoire. C’est la signification de «sankofa» en langue Akan : «Nous devons retourner en arrière et revendiquer notre passé pour avancer». Il ne s’agit donc pas d’un simple film historique, mais aussi d’une critique fondamentale du néocolonialisme dans une mise en scène subtile et magistralement tournée.
