CYANOMETER by Martin Bricelj Baraga is a monument to the blue sky. It is inspired by the original cyanometer invented by the Genevan naturalist and scientist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure. Its cyanometer - a cardboard disc colored around its periphery with different shades of blue - forms the heart of the monument, delicately reflecting our gaze towards the sky.
CYANOMETER is both a monument and an open source software that periodically collects images of the sky.
The software uploads images of the sky to the website where they are associated with the corresponding shades of blue on the Saussure color wheel.
With air quality data collected simultaneously in Geneva, Ljubijana (Slovenia), Wroclaw (Poland) and Dresden (Germany) where similar works are installed, the CYANOMETER website creates a kind of online archive and retrospective calendar that measures and documents changes in our environment.
In a cloud-based world, the only clouds that really matter are those we see in the sky.
CYANOMETER displays three types of information: the level of air pollution, the pollutant whose concentration has increased, and the source of the pollution.
The color scale from green to red visualizes the air pollution. The green color indicates low air pollution while the red color indicates a very high level of pollution.
