In a 16 square metre studio, ‘Elle’ whimsically fends off boredom; she dances, sings, drinks, eats and plays with an unbridled impropriety that only her solitude affords. The banality of everyday life, when embraced without moral barriers, conceals a wealth of guilty, selfish and thoroughly enjoyable pleasures. How can we simply be happy, a little each day? By letting emotions and impulses flow freely through us? A shameless playground, the young woman's bedroom becomes a grand enterprise of self-entertainment until a stranger breaks into her home. The visitor's intrusive presence puts an end to the gentle madness that permeates the space. The solo becomes a duo. With L'Autre comes the need to channel behaviour. Madness and fantasy wither away. When the self-image takes over, raw spontaneity is swallowed up by the desire to please. Moving from solitude to cohabitation, Ainsi soit-Elle reveals the closeness of emotions that are at odds with each other: freedom versus control, carefree versus anxious, joy versus rage. Tender and kamikaze.

Dans un studio de 16 mètres carrés, «Elle» trompe l’ennui avec fantaisie ; elle danse, chante, boit, mange, joue avec une inconvenance débridée que seule sa solitude lui offre. La banalité du quotidien, lorsqu’on l’investit sans barrière morale, recèle plein de plaisirs coupables, égoïstes et tellement jouissifs. Comment être simplement heureuse, un peu chaque jour? En laissant les émotions et les pulsions nous traverser librement? Aire de jeu impudique, la chambre de la jeune femme devient une grande entreprise d’auto-divertissement jusqu’à ce qu’un inconnu s’introduise chez elle. La présence intrusive du visiteur met fin à la douce folie qui imprégnait les lieux. Le solo devient duo. Avec L’Autre, arrive l’obligation de canalisation du comportement. Folie et fantaisie s’étiolent. Lorsque le regard sur soi prend le dessus, la spontanéité brute se fait vampiriser par la volonté de plaire. En transitant de la solitude à la cohabitation, Ainsi soit-Elle révèle la proximité d’émotions pourtant opposées: liberté versus contrôle, insouciance versus anxiété, joie versus rage. Ainsi soit-elle: tendre et kamikaze.
