Inés, a Spanish animation filmmaker, is in Ahmedabad, India, breaking up with her boyfriend Àmàr. While there, she wanders into a bookshop and stumbles upon Sultana’s Dream, a science-fiction story penned by Rokeya Hossain in 1905. The tale envisions Ladyland, an idyllic realm where women rule and men remain sequestered, taking care of the household. Intrigued by both the text and its author, Inés embarks on a journey across India in pursuit of the only place where women might live in peace. Sultana’s Dream is an animated film that fuses watercolours and henna illustrations.

Inés, une cinéaste d’animation espagnole, se trouve à Ahmedabad, en Inde, pour rompre avec son petit ami Àmàr. Lors de son séjour, elle entre dans une librairie et tombe par hasard sur Sultana’s Dream, un récit de science-fiction écrit par Rokeya Hossain en 1905. Il décrit Ladyland, une utopie dans laquelle les femmes dirigent le pays tandis que les hommes vivent reclus et s’occupent des tâches ménagères. Fascinée par cette histoire et son autrice, Inés entreprend un voyage à travers le pays à la recherche du seul endroit où les femmes peuvent vivre en paix. Sultana’s Dream est un film d’animation qui mélange aquarelles et dessins au henné.
