Jean-Baptiste Wicar and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille: a shared history. With Annie de Wambrechies, honorary chief curator

The name of Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762-1834) is inseparable from that of the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, both by his talent as a painter and a draughtsman, The Wicar Prize, which was awarded to young artists for its fine art collection and training. To do this, on his death in 1834, Wicar left a fortune, a workshop and part of his collection including drawings by Raphael, the relief of Donatello, the wax head, to the Lille Society of Sciences, Agriculture and Arts which gave it to the city in 1865.
Having had a successful career in Italy for some thirty years, Wicar enjoyed all the honours and his name still stands today as one of the specialists in Italian art of his time.
On a walk that will take us through several rooms of the museum, Annie de Wambrechies proposes to make you discover the richness of such a personality: the man, the artist, the collector and the inventor of the Wicar Prize.

Le nom du Lillois Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762-1834) demeure indissociable de celui du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, aussi bien par son talent de peintre et de dessinateur, que par son goût de la collection d'art et le fameux Prix Wicar conçu afin de parfaire la formation de jeunes artistes. Pour ce faire, à son décès en 1834, Wicar lègue fortune, atelier et une partie de sa collection dont les dessins de Raphaël, le relief de Donatello, la Tête de cire, à la Société des Sciences, de l'Agriculture et des Arts de Lille qui la cède à la Ville en 1865.
Fort d'une carrière fructueuse qu'il mènera durant une trentaine d'années en Italie, Wicar a joui de tous les honneurs, son nom subsistant aujourd'hui comme l'un des spécialistes de l'art italien de son temps.
Au long d'une promenade qui nous conduira dans plusieurs salles du musée, Annie de Wambrechies propose de vous faire découvrir la richesse d'une telle personnalité : l'homme, l'artiste, le collectionneur et l'inventeur du Prix Wicar.

De naam van Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762-1834) is onlosmakelijk verbonden met die van het Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, zowel door zijn talent als schilder, de Wicar Prize, die werd toegekend aan jonge kunstenaars voor haar kunstcollectie en opleiding. Om dit te doen, bij zijn dood in 1834, liet Wicar een fortuin, een workshop en een deel van zijn collectie met tekeningen van Raphael, de verlichting van Donatello, de wax hoofd, achter aan de Lille Society of Sciences, Agriculture and Arts die het in 1865 aan de stad gaf.
Na een succesvolle carrière in Italië voor zo'n dertig jaar heeft Wicar alle eer genoten en zijn naam staat nog steeds als een van de specialisten in de Italiaanse kunst van zijn tijd.
Tijdens een wandeling die ons door verschillende zalen van het museum zal leiden, stelt Annie de Wambrechies voor om u de rijkdom van een dergelijke persoonlijkheid te laten ontdekken: De man, de kunstenaar, de verzamelaar en de uitvinder van de Wicarprijs.
