In 1914, 1.5 million Belgians – a quarter of the population at the time – fled the violence of war. It is estimated that 600,000 of them spent the entire war abroad, mainly in France, Britain and the Netherlands. In addition, thousands of others were forcibly displaced: they were evacuated by the military on both sides of the front, as their place of residence had become too dangerous due to the evolution of the conflict. Many have thus become “refugees in their own countries.” At the end of the war, a difficult return awaited them, sometimes delayed for several years. Some never returned, not seeing a future in their country.
In this exhibition, the museum In Flanders Fields tells the story of Belgian refugees from the First World War through personal stories. These testimonies come from the museum’s collection or were entrusted to us by the public. We asked nine illustrators to bring these buried stories back to life.

En 1914, 1,5 million de Belges – soit un quart de la population de l’époque – ont fui les violences de la guerre. On estime que 600 000 d’entre eux ont passé la totalité de la guerre à l’étranger, principalement en France, Grande-Bretagne et aux Pays-Bas. En outre, des milliers d’autres ont été déplacés de force : ils ont été évacués par les militaires des deux côtés du front, car leur lieu de résidence était devenu trop dangereux en raison de l’évolution du conflit. Beaucoup sont ainsi devenus des « réfugiés dans leur propre pays ». À la fin de la guerre, un retour difficile les attendait, parfois retardé de plusieurs années. Certains ne sont jamais revenus, ne voyant plus d’avenir dans leur pays.
Dans cette exposition, le musée In Flanders Fields raconte l’histoire des réfugiés belges de la Première Guerre mondiale à travers des récits personnels. Ces témoignages proviennent de la collection du musée ou nous ont été confiés par le public. Nous avons demandé à neuf illustrateurs de faire revivre ces histoires enfouies.

In 1914 ontvluchtten 1,5 miljoen Belgen – een kwart van de bevolking toentertijd – het oorlogsgeweld. Naar schatting brachten 600.000 van hen de hele oorlog door in het buitenland, voornamelijk in Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië en Nederland. Bovendien werden er duizenden gedwongen ontheemden: Zij werden aan beide zijden van het front door het leger geëvacueerd omdat hun verblijfplaats te gevaarlijk was geworden door de evolutie van het conflict. Velen zijn dus "vluchtelingen in hun eigen land" geworden. Aan het einde van de oorlog wachtte een moeilijke terugkeer hen, soms vertraagd met enkele jaren. Sommigen zijn nooit teruggekeerd en zien geen toekomst in hun land.
In deze tentoonstelling vertelt het in Flanders Fields Museum het verhaal van Belgische vluchtelingen uit de eerste Wereldoorlog door middel van persoonlijke verhalen. Deze getuigenissen komen uit de collectie van het museum of zijn ons toevertrouwd door het publiek. We vroegen negen illustratoren om deze begraven verhalen nieuw leven in te blazen.
