Botanical illustration’s treasures: 15th – 19th centuries
Participants to this visit will have the opportunity to discover 400 years of botanical illustration via the presentation of sumptuous botanical works from the world-renowned library of the GBG.

Engravings were used to illustrate books from the earliest days of printing. By the end of the 15th century, woodcuts of plants were enriching the texts of scholars. The 16th century brought prints that were faithful to reality. The quality of the plates reached new heights at the beginning of the 19th century. Of course, the more artistic "belles éditions" have never disappeared since the florileges of the 16th century.
A "books on tables" display will allow visitors to admire these masterpieces of botanical illustration spanning more than 400 years, a selection of which are reproduced in the panel exhibition "La gravure botanique sort au Jardin".

Trésors de l’illustration botanique : XVe – XIXe siècles
Grâce à la présentation de somptueux ouvrages botaniques de la Bibliothèque, 400 ans d’illustration botanique pourront être contemplées.

Dès les prémices de l’imprimerie, des gravures illustrent les ouvrages. Avant la fin du XVe siècle, des bois gravés de plantes enrichissent les textes des savants. Le XVIe siècle apportera des estampes fidèles à la réalité. La qualité des planches atteindra des sommets au commencement du XIXe siècle. Bien évidemment les « belles éditions » plus artistiques n’ont jamais disparus depuis les florilèges du XVIe siècle.
Une présentation « livres sur tables » permet d’admirer ces chefs-d’œuvre de l’illustration botanique sur plus de 400 ans dont une sélection de planches sont reproduites dans l'exposition sur panneaux "La gravure botanique sort au Jardin"
