Living Smile Vidya is a transgender actress, author and activist from India, who sought asylum in Switzerland in 2018. Her poignant yet comical one-woman-show bears her name and features her own story: that of a trans Dalit woman, an artist in exile, and a fighter for the right to exist freely and with dignity. In India, she expected no national recognition or miracles. She simply wanted to live without being crushed. In Switzerland, she sought to free herself from another kind of invisibility: life in refugee centres, and the intrusive questions and constant need to justify her existence that come with it. Finding her own apartment became an act of independence – almost a luxury. She dances, sings and projects her story and struggles on stage in this moving yet challenging show, exposing her unique and powerful soul.

Living Smile Vidya est une actrice, autrice et militante transgenre originaire d’Inde, réfugiée en Suisse depuis 2018. Son seule en scène porte son nom parce qu’elle y raconte, avec force et humour, son propre parcours : celui d’une femme trans et dalit*, celui d’une artiste en exil, celui d’un combat pour exister librement et dignement. En Inde, elle n’attendait ni reconnaissance nationale, ni miracle. Elle souhaitait simplement vivre sans être écrasée. En Suisse, elle a voulu s’affranchir d’une autre forme d’invisibilisation : celle subie par les personnes enfermées dans des centres pour réfugié·es où elles sont en outre soumises à des questions intrusives s’apparentant à des demandes de justification quotidienne de leur existence. Dans ce contexte, obtenir un appartement à soi devient un acte d’indépendance, presque un luxe. Son histoire et ses combats, Living Smile Vidya les danse, les chante et les projette. Elle nous livre sans détour sa voix, inclassable et puissante. C’est intime et frontal, drôle et impertinent. Dur, parfois. Tendre, aussi.
