A tribute? No, a comeback. Fifty years after her legendary concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Nina Simone is back! American soprano Claron McFadden offers a mimetic portrayal, following Simone’s voice live via headphones. A voice that sings, that speaks intimately to her audience, that defends political stances and confesses the sorrow of not becoming the first Black concert pianist in history. A voice full of expression and emotion, transporting McFadden into a fantastic “layering” process. “I let her fill my soul”, she says – and she fills ours, too.

La soprane américaine Claron McFadden en assure le tableau mimétique, suivant sa voix en live dans son casque. Sa voix qui chante, qui parle à l’oreille de son public, qui défend ses prises de position politiques, avoue sa déception de ne pas être devenue la première pianiste noire de l’Histoire. Une voix dont les expressions et émotions transportent Claron McFadden dans une « superposition fantasmatique ». « Je la laisse remplir mon âme », dit-elle. Et elle comble la nôtre.
