Little story of Giants: the legend of Lydéric and Phinaert
For the 20 years of their recognition as intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO, the museum is dedicating an exhibition to the giants, emblematic of the North of France and Belgium.

They are called Reuze (giant in Flemish) in Dunkirk or Cassel, Gayant (giant in Picard) in Douai, or even Jehan, an ancient form of the name Jean. Measuring up to 7 meters high, the Giants perpetuate a tradition dating back nearly 500 years.
Where do they come from? How are they designed? On what occasions do they come out? How did their registration at UNESCO take place?
Discover or rediscover their fabulous history through the astonishing collections of the Musée de l'Hospice Comtesse de Lille (photographs, postcards, engravings, sign ...) but also a set of plates, drawings and film from the Palais des Beaux-Arts signed by François Boucq around Lydéric and Phinaert, the famous giants of Lille. A paper-mache giant’s head and a wicker body will also reveal all their manufacturing secrets.
A "small" Lydéric of 3.70 meters, surprise guest of the House of the Giants of Ath (Belgium), will also be part!
This exhibition will be accompanied by several events, orchestrated by Dorian Demarcq (craftsman of art, maker of giants): festive opening on September 17 with fanfare and meeting of giants, heritage day on September 20 and 21 and Terrible Night of Halloween on October 31, 2025.
This exhibition is produced with the support of the Flemish delegation in France, in partnership with the Archives municipales de Lille and the Bibliothèque municipale de Lille.

On les appelle Reuze (géant en flamand) à Dunkerque ou Cassel, Gayant (géant en picard ) à Douai, ou encore Jehan, forme ancienne du nom Jean. Pouvant mesurer jusqu’à 7 mètres de haut, les Géants perpétuent une tradition vieille de près de 500 ans.
D’où viennent-ils ? Comment sont-ils conçus ? À quelles occasions sortent-ils ? Comment s’est déroulée leur inscription à l’UNESCO ?
Découvrez ou redécouvrez leur fabuleuse histoire à travers les collections étonnantes du Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse de Lille (photographies, cartes postales, gravures, enseigne ...) mais aussi un ensemble de planches, dessins et film du Palais des Beaux-Arts signés François Boucq autour de Lydéric et Phinaert, les célèbres géants de Lille. Une tête de géant en papier mâché et un corps en osier permettront aussi de révéler tous leurs secrets de fabrication.
Un « petit » Lydéric de 3,70 mètres, invité surprise de la Maison des Géants d’Ath (Belgique), sera aussi de la partie !
Cette exposition sera assortie de plusieurs événements, orchestrés par Dorian Demarcq (artisan d’art, facteur de géants) : vernissage festif le 17 septembre avec fanfare et réunion de géants, journée du patrimoine les 20 et 21 septembre et Nuit terrible d’Halloween le 31 octobre 2025.
Cette exposition est réalisée avec le concours de la délégation de la Flandre en France en partenariat avec les Archives municipales de Lille et la Bibliothèque municipale de Lille.

Ze worden Reuze (reus in Vlaams) genoemd in Duinkerken of Cassel, Gayant (reus in Picard) in Douai, of zelfs Jehan, een oude vorm van de naam Jean. Met een hoogte van 7 meter houden de Giants een traditie van bijna 500 jaar in stand.
Waar komen ze vandaan? Hoe zijn ze ontworpen? Bij welke gelegenheden komen ze naar buiten? Hoe vond hun registratie bij UNESCO plaats?
Ontdek of herontdek hun prachtige geschiedenis door middel van de verbazingwekkende collecties van het Musée de l'Hospice Comtesse de Lille (foto's, ansichtkaarten, gravures, teken ...) maar ook een set platen, tekeningen en film uit het Palais des Beaux-Arts gesigneerd door François Boucq rond Lydéric en Phinaert, de beroemde reuzen van Lille. Het hoofd van een papiermache-reus en een rieten lichaam onthullen ook al hun productiegeheimen.
Een "kleine" Lydéric van 3,70 meter, verrassing gast van het Huis van de Giants of Ath (België), zal ook deel uitmaken!
Deze tentoonstelling zal vergezeld gaan van verschillende evenementen, georganiseerd door Dorian Demarcq (ambachtsman van kunst, maker van reuzen): Feestelijke opening op 17 september met fanfare en ontmoeting van reuzen, erfgoeddag op 20 en 21 september en verschrikkelijke nacht van Halloween op 31 oktober 2025.
Deze tentoonstelling wordt geproduceerd met steun van de Vlaamse delegatie in Frankrijk, in samenwerking met de Archives municipales de Lille en de Bibliothèque municipale de Lille.
Opening voor iedereen geopend op woensdag 17 september 2025 vanaf 18:30 uur.
