They also allow us to understand the history of this exceptional work of art and the journey of Ismaël Villéger and his son Guy. The recent history of the house and its revival are also discussed.
Free visit possible from 10:30 to 17:30.
Catering possible on site by reservation at noon. Single menu at €25:

Beets cooked in the oven (Neuillac) with goat cream
Pork stew with chorizo, seasonal vegetables and fried garlic rice
Clafoutis pom'figs or grapes

A unique place in Charente-Maritime, the Maison de la Gaieté, in Chérac, is a café, restaurant, cabaret, theater and cinema, which was decorated with mosaics by its owner, Ismaël Villéger (1881-1963) and by his son Guy (1926-2007), from 1937 until the 1950s. Millions of tessera – pieces of broken dishes – were needed to adorn the exterior facades of the establishment and decorate the interior with paintings, vases and mosaic-decorated furniture. This major work of naive art has been for several decades a high place of conviviality and festivity in Chérac. Closed in the 1970s and threatened with disappearance, the House of Gaiety was listed as a historical monument in 2014 and it was bought by a resident of Chérac, Laurent Hervé, in order to perpetuate the work of art and its cultural and leisure activity. The House of Gaiety has just been restored and opens its doors again to the public.
