À propos du lieu

Parc du Bois d'Avaize

Parc du Bois d'Avaize, Saint-Etienne

Loire

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

A forest so close to the city centre! The Avaize wood is located on a hill on the border of Saint-Étienne and Terrenoire. Opened to the public in 1996 on a former mining site reclaimed by natural vegetation, it is classified «Natura 2000» for the conservation of natural environments for the richness of its flora. It is home to the Dwarf Gorse (a thorny shrub) in its most eastern location. It also plays the role of a geological conservatory thanks to the outcrops of a geological layer, the most recent of the carboniferous, described for the first time in Saint-Étienne by the École des Mines, called the Stéphanien. A wood, therefore, to go to discover plants and soil… In addition, Avaize wood benefits from the Nature 2050 program to strengthen its biodiversity and improve its connection to the Pilat Regional Natural Park.
