Driven to the edge by Alceste’s radicalism—his readiness to renounce all forms of social convention—the characters reveal, over the course of a single day, the contradictions of human nature, governed by “a heart that reason knows nothing of.” They form a social microcosm, not set in the hushed intimacy of a drawing room, but in an open space: the landing of a townhouse in the midst of being moved into. This setting—a place in flux—is a metaphor for what the repertoire should be, according to the director: “ever evolving, fully rooted in its own century, yet nourished by the past and already looking toward the future.”
“I belong to a repertory theatre,” says Clément Hervieu-Léger, the new general administrator of the Comédie-Française, “and I believe that if we don't bring a fresh perspective to these works, then repertory theatre loses its purpose.” First staged in 2014 and performed 197 times as of this revival, the production is one of those timeless pieces that endure across the years with a relevance that age cannot dull.

Poussés à bout par la radicalité de ce dernier prêt à renoncer à toute forme de mondanité, les personnages dévoilent, le temps d’une journée, les contradictions du genre humain soumis à « un cœur que la raison ne connaît point ». Ils composent un microcosme social qui prend place non pas dans l’ambiance feutrée d’un salon mais dans un espace ouvert, le palier d’un hôtel particulier en cours d’emménagement. Le décor est un lieu en mouvement, la métaphore de ce que doit être, selon le metteur en scène, le répertoire «qui évolue, complètement dans son siècle, mais nourri des siècles précédents et tourné déjà vers le siècle à venir ».
« J’appartiens à un théâtre de répertoire et je me dis que si l’on ne pose pas un regard neuf sur les œuvres, alors ce théâtre de répertoire n’a plus lieu d’être », dit Clément Hervieu-Léger, nouvel administrateur général de la Comédie-Française. Créé en 2014, avec 197 représentations à la date de cette reprise, le spectacle fait partie de ceux, intemporels, qui traversent les ans avec une acuité que l’âge ne saurait altérer.
