Jean Frédéric Oberlin (1740 – 1826) is one of the leading figures of 18th century Alsace, pastor, pedagogue, botanist and human rights defender; he attempted to build a new society. Its objective was the formation of man in his living environment and in all its dimensions: intellectual, manual, artistic, economic and spiritual. His work can be likened to a quest for meaning and the right balance. At the Oberlin Museum, it is not a question of passively looking at an object, an image, a cartel, but of perceiving, listening, reading, building, experimenting, manipulating, reasoning, feeling and finally understanding the complexity of the world of the pastor of Waldersbach. The permanent exhibition makes visible the complex journey of Jean Frédéric Oberlin’s personal project and allows visitors to penetrate into his intimacy and contradictions.
