Since December 12, 2015, the Musée Unterlinden has been given a new setting by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. The former convent renovated by the Historical Monuments is dedicated to ancient art and art objects, the contemporary building is devoted to modern art collections and temporary exhibitions and the underground gallery between the convent and the modern building presents a panorama of 19th and early 20th century art.
Presentation of the Unterlinden Museum (1853 – 2015)
The extension of the Unterlinden Museum by Herzog & de Meuron, with the construction of a resolutely contemporary building that fits into medieval architecture, is a remarkable episode in the history of the Museum.
As you walk through the convent and the Museum’s collections, you can see the successive stages of a history spanning more than 150 years. The walls and works bear witness to the dynamic work of the Schongauer Society, an association that has run the Unterlinden Museum since 1853.
