Polish Poster school: where are the women?

Discover the often overlooked talent of Polish women graphic designers who, despite the obstacles, have created remarkable posters and enriched the history of graphic art.

In the second half of the twentieth century, poster design in Poland was considered a masculine activity, requiring an intellectual capacity for synthesis that women lacked. Yet women graphic designers did exist, and created some remarkable posters. What is their situation and why are they neglected in historiography?

Katarzyna Matul, PhD, art historian, author of numerous articles and books on the history of graphic design and the relationship between art and politics during the Cold War. Founder of Galerie Grafit, which promotes Polish art and culture abroad.
