At this debate organized by the Association des Amis du Musée, Luis Lema, a leading reporter specializing in international current affairs, will discuss with Pascal Hufschmid, General Director of the Musée, the weight of images in our understanding of contemporary humanitarian crises.
What are the roles and responsibilities of the media and heritage institutions in our understanding of conflicts and their portrayal in images? How can we avoid shortcuts and promote mutual understanding, rather than contributing to the growing polarization of our societies and public opinion?
From the point of view of a benchmark medium like Le Temps, Luis Lema will discuss how the daily press bears the responsibility of analyzing and documenting, at a pace as sustained as it is demanding, what is happening in the four corners of the globe. As a counterpoint, Pascal Hufschmid will discuss how the Museum offers audiences a privileged space to deconstruct these issues over time.
At a time when the dynamics of conflict and media coverage are spiraling out of control, impacting the very foundations of our ability to live together, the Human Kind exhibition, currently on show at the Museum, offers just such a pause to take stock and take a salutary step back from the issues at stake. This conference opens a new cycle of events under the aegis of Yves Daccord, President of the Association of Friends of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, who will moderate the debates.

A l’occasion de ce débat organisé par l’Association des Amis du Musée, Luis Lema, grand reporter spécialiste de l’actualité internationale, dialoguera avec Pascal Hufschmid, Directeur général du Musée, afin d’aborder la question du poids des images dans notre compréhension des crises humanitaires contemporaines.
Quelles sont les rôles et les responsabilités des médias et des institutions patrimoniales dans notre compréhension des conflits et de leur mise en images ? Comment éviter les raccourcis et favoriser une compréhension mutuelle plutôt qu’œuvrer à la polarisation croissante de nos sociétés et des opinions publiques ?
