Place to the tragic epic of Faust after Gounod for this second and last work of the season proposed jointly by the Orchestre National de Lille and the Lille Opera. After Verdi’s Falstaff presented in 2023, director Denis Podalydès tackles here Faust, a hero steeped in antagonisms imagined by Goethe, whose destiny that closely combines vice and virtue, can find resonance in our current era. Gounod’s Faust, the most performed French opera in the world after Carmen, is characterized by an expressive musical richness, where the melody is sometimes soft and tender during love duets, sometimes bright and truculente during crowd scenes. So many delicious contradictions that will explain the eternal youth of this jewel of French opera.
