In France, making fun of those in power has become a risky business. Over the past thirty years, the most outspoken comedians on television and radio have been systematically neutralised, marginalised, censored and even sacked. In both the public and private media, the same pattern repeats itself: satire is tolerated as long as it doesn’t bite. As soon as it touches on those in power, the microphone is cut off. From the sets of Canal+ to the studios of France Inter, via the corridors of France Télévisions, and from the reign of Nicolas Sarkozy to that of Emmanuel Macron, this documentary traces the mechanics of a campaign to silence critics, which speaks volumes about the true state of freedom of expression in the French broadcasting sector.

En France, rire des puissants est devenu un sport à risque. En trente ans, les humoristes les plus libres de la télévision et de la radio ont été méthodiquement neutralisés, marginalisés, censurés, voire virés. Dans l’audiovisuel public comme dans les médias privés, le même mécanisme se répète : on tolère la satire tant qu’elle ne mord pas. Dès qu’elle touche au pouvoir, on coupe le micro. Des plateaux de Canal+ aux studios de France Inter en passant par les couloirs de France Télévisions, du règne de Nicolas Sarkozy à celui d’Emmanuel Macron, ce documentaire retrace la mécanique d’une mise au silence qui en dit long sur l’état réel de la liberté d’expression dans l’audiovisuel français.

In Frankrijk is het belachelijk maken van de machtigen een risicovolle bezigheid geworden. In de afgelopen dertig jaar zijn de meest vrijmoedige komieken op televisie en radio stelselmatig uitgeschakeld, gemarginaliseerd, gecensureerd of zelfs ontslagen. Zowel bij de publieke omroep als bij de particuliere media herhaalt zich hetzelfde patroon: satire wordt getolereerd zolang ze niet te scherp is. Zodra ze de macht raakt, wordt de microfoon uitgeschakeld. Van de studio’s van Canal+ tot die van France Inter, via de gangen van France Télévisions, van het bewind van Nicolas Sarkozy tot dat van Emmanuel Macron: deze documentaire schetst de mechanismen van een tot zwijgen brengen die veel zegt over de werkelijke toestand van de vrijheid van meningsuiting in de Franse audiovisuele sector.
