Fort Saint-Louis is a French military fort of the Vauban type which is now home to the naval base of the armed forces in the West Indies, with 6 ships of the National Navy and its workshops. France began its construction in 1638. In the course of history, it will have several appellations: "Fort Royal" then "Fort of the Republic" and finally "Fort Louis" according to the evolution of the Regimes and even "Fort Edward" passing three times in the hands of the English. In 1814, the Restoration gave it its present name of Fort Saint-Louis.
Free visit upon prior registration. The tour includes a one-way marked free circuit with QR codes to freely discover the history of the Fort. A PMR circuit is also planned. Many stands will be proposed: SNSM, DEAL, INRAP, recruitment #armed as well as conferences (every day at 10 am and 2:30 pm) where the operational missions of the naval base of Fort-de-France will be presented as well as the historical evocation of the site. The Harbour Tug Maïto Coastal, docked, will be open to the visit.
Throughout the weekend, a troupe of actors, made up and dressed in period clothes, will offer interactive animations to the public. Also, a sound animation will be offered within Fort Saint-Louis, in two places (casemate and chemin de ronde).
Due to the duration of the visit, the last on-site entry will be at 4pm.
