The project Heritage minor, major memories is part of a complementary approach to heritage already recognized and protected. It proposes to pay attention to the heritage of everyday life: ordinary places, uses, stories of inhabitants, who yet fully participate in the identity and memory of the city.
The objective is not to redefine what institutional heritage is, but to broaden the perspective, in coherence with the European orientations resulting notably from the Faro Convention, which places the inhabitants at the heart of the relationship to heritage.
The project is based on a participatory and educational approach. Ahead of the Heritage Days, young people accompanied by I.PEICC, artists, architects and researchers will carry out a work of identification and collection of memories. This living matter will then feed a conference and an urban walk open to the public.
The challenge is twofold: to allow a better appropriation of heritage by residents, especially young people, and to contribute to a sensitive and shared reading of the city, complementary to the work already carried out by heritage institutions. The challenge is to strengthen the link between residents and their urban environment, which contributes to better ownership and thus to better heritage preservation.
Finally, the project is part of a Mediterranean dimension, by crossing the perspectives between Montpellier and Oran, around common issues: memory, transmission, uses and evolution of cities. It is therefore a project at the same time cultural, educational and citizen, which reinforces the link between heritage and quality of life.”
The urban walk is conceived as a space for mediation and dialogue, allowing stories and experiences to be valued. The goal is above all to strengthen the collective ownership of the city.
