Proudly enthroned on the Place Gambetta, the Clock Tower is the living memory of Vauvert. Once one of the three fortified gates of the ancient medieval city of "Posquières", only the "Porte de Panapeys" has survived the centuries.
The upper part of the tower, as we know it today, was rebuilt in the mid-19th century (1848-1849). This heritage building, dear to the Vaudois, contains numerous written testimonies and holds well-kept secrets, starting with its dungeon. Located on the first level, this cramped place, lit by a simple murderarch, served as a military prison at the beginning of the 18th century, notably during the revolt of the Camisards.
The walls still bear the marks of scratches, witnesses of the anguish of the prisoners. The bell of the Tower has punctuated the life of the inhabitants for centuries. Carried out in Montpellier in 1695, it bears the Latin inscription: "SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM" ("Blessed be the name of God!"). Thanks to this particularity, it was classifie
