According to tradition, to commemorate a victory won near Civaux, Clovis built an oratory in which he installed clerics. This tradition could explain the date of 501 engraved on the tympanum of the portal of the main façade. The oratory became an abbey, destroyed in 866 and restored in 987 by Boson, Count de la Marche, who instituted regular canons there. Tradition reports that the present church was built by the second abbot, Drutus Mortemard, who made a trip to the Holy Land. With a Latin cross plan, the building has a transept of the same width as the nave, followed by a choir closed at the end by a circular colonnade around which the collaterals revolve and radiate three projecting and circular chapels. To the right and left of the aisles of the choir are two other similar chapels, opening onto the transept. At the crossroads of the transept, the junction of the four vaults of the nave, the crosspieces and the choir is formed by four pendants that support an octagonal dome, above which rises the bell tower with its arrow. At the right of the first arcade of the nave, another dome supports the bell tower on the main facade. Above the chapel of the apse was erected a fortified tower which may have been built in the middle of the 15th century.
