The national domain of Pau includes most of the domain of the Viscounts of Béarn, who later became kings of Navarre and later kings of France. It currently consists of three parts: The castle and the surrounding gardens, the low plant and the park. The gardens, mostly laid out in the 16th century, were amputated during the Revolution. At the Restoration, the Basse Plante and the Grand Parc were returned to Louis XVIII by a society of citizens who had acquired them.
