VNF Nord-Est is responsible for the daily management of 1,375 km of river network: river, regional planning, tourism and water management.
In 2024, the canalized Moselle celebrates its 60 years of existence! Officially opened for navigation on May 26, 1964, on the section Koblenz-Thionville, then in 1979 until Neuves-Maisons it constitutes a major international axis for river transport: More than 4,000 merchant vessels carry more than 5 million tonnes of cargo each year. The port of Metz (57) is also the first national inland port for the shipment of agri-food products. With 15 harbours and recreational stopovers, it attracts more than 1,000 recreational boats each year. The river also has its place in the heart of the city and the Eurometropolis where locals and tourists can enjoy many activities on and around the water throughout the year.
The double lock of Metz consisting of a large lock and a small lock (Freycinet), built between 1963 and 1965.
