Oppidum du Baou de Saint-Marcel

Small Gaulish village at the gates of Marseille. In the 6th century B.C. a Celtic community set up a fortified village on this plateau overlooking the Huveaune valley, at the eastern gates of Massalia, and occupied it until the end of the 2nd century B.C. (date of the Roman conquest): lifestyles, production and circulation, exchanges with other communities and sites… Objects and furniture from the excavations can be discovered at the Musée d'Histoire de Marseille. Today a protected and visitable archaeological reserve with registration or open days.
