European Heritage Days 2023 in Le Lavandou

The City of Le Lavandou offers 3 guided tours of the exhibition “Henri-Edmond Cross, dans le soleil du Var; œuvres sur papier” currently presented at the Villa Théo in Saint-Clair.

These visits, allowing to enter more in the work of this great neo-impressionist painter, will be commented by Raphaël Dupouy, cultural attaché of Le Lavandou.
Like his friends the painters Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, Henri-Edmond Cross is one of the main actors of the neo-impressionism and his role is essential in the history of the liberation of the color at the dawn of the twentieth century. He adopted the technique of the division of tones in 1891 and remained faithful to him until his death in 1910, when he was one of the fathers of modernity. Born in Douai in 1856, Cross participated in the foundation of the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, before leaving the capital in 1891 to settle permanently in the Var, in Cabasson, then in Saint-TropezClair in Le Lavandou where he built his house just a few hundred meters from the beach. There, despite painful health problems, Cross reached his most fertile period. He pushes his research to the extreme and, abandoning the constraints he imposed on himself, lets his art flourish according to his imagination, especially through the use of watercolor.
