The work and the reconstruction of Pierre Graille’s workshop

"Telling a story is one thing, the most difficult is to make this piece of clay something that thinks."

Modest employee of the Poste in Grambois (Luberon-Vaucluse), santonnier, faience maker, wood sculptor, Pierre Graille (1915-2014) was a man with many facets. Self-taught, he left an immense work inspired by his love of Provence, his thirst for knowledge and culture.
Pierre Graille represented in santon the men and women of his village, the people dear to his heart, artists or political personalities.
"Telling a story is one thing, the most difficult is to make this piece of clay something that thinks." Following his recommendations, his daughters deposited at the castle of La Tour d'Aigues almost all the content of his workshop. The heritage days will be an opportunity to discover the reconstruction of Pierre Graille’s workshop and his personal creations of earthenware santons and wood carving.

La Tour d'Aigues was a pottery production centre during the second half of the 18th century thanks to» Jean-Baptiste-Jérôme BRUNY (1724-1795), owner of the castle. This descendant of a family of the great Marseilles bourgeoisie was a scholar, a lover of natural history, medicine, agronomy and a great lover of art. His entrepreneurial spirit, his curiosity, his taste for applied research led him to try various experiments in the most varied fields: thus he created a pottery in a bastide next to the castle, some of whose productions are in the museum. He surrounded himself with artists, researched engravings that could serve as m
