Musée Calvet

The museum, born from the bequest made by Esprit Calvet (1728-1810), a doctor, scholar and curious Avignonnais, to the Calvet Foundation, is housed in the former hotel of Villeneuve-Martignan, acquired by the City in 1833\. This sumptuous architectural setting, built between courtyard and garden, was built between 1741 and 1753 by Jean-Baptiste Franque and his son, François II, former boarder of the Académie de France in Rome, architect of the king in Paris. The exhibited works offer a vast panorama of French, Italian and Flemish painting and sculpture from the 15th to the 20th century, including icons of Western art such as Jacques David’s masterpiece, «La mort de Bara», «La baigneuse endormie près d'une source» of Chassériau, five Soutine. The decorative arts also occupy a place of choice: ceramics, goldsmiths, bronzes, enamels, stained glass, furniture.
