Founded in the 5th century, the Abbey of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul de la Couture was partly destroyed by the Normans and then rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries. The church, in the gothic Plantagenet style, serves as a model for many churches in Maine and Anjou.
