Gilles was originally a Greek port city named Heracleus or Rhodanousia, founded five centuries before Christ. Later, during the time of the Counts of Toulouse and the heyday of the famous Benedictine abbey, trade developed there, before experiencing a new boom in the 18th century, with the construction of a large navigation channel linking the port of Sète to the Rhône.
The port of Saint-Gilles has thus become the only marina in the agglomeration community of Nîmes Métropole, constituting an important lever for the economic development of the municipality.
