À propos du lieu

Espace Les Tours
6 Montée du Château, 30200 La Roque-sur-Cèze
  • Gard
  • Occitanie
These two towers were built in the Middle Ages to house the garrison that defended the fort, built between a steep rock, the rampart and the medieval bridge. After the opening of the walls, they became housing or outbuilding of a farm. At the beginning of the 20th century, they were called the Towers of Saint-Etienne, named after their last occupants. Abandoned and in very bad condition, they were bought in 1951 by Jean Palou, who created there his ephemeral «theatre of ruins». After the death of Palou, abandoned again, in ruins, they were bought in 1986 and restored by the association «La Roca». The south tower retains its medieval defence. The north tower houses an important dovecote, rich of 250 boulins, testimony of the village’s grain past. They remain today a cultural place.
