Free visit of the Saint-Girons crypt
Discover this crypt, place of worship for many pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela. It was intended for the conservation and veneration of the relics of Saint Girons. It was located under the choir of the church of the Romanesque abbey of Saint-Girons which was demolished in 1904, because of its dilapidation and its distance from the town center.
It is accessed by two side stairs built in the thickness of the walls. In the center, 4 marble columns surround the slightly raised floor where the tomb of Saint Girons was located. Admire the fourteen Romanesque capitals classified as Historical Monuments! Whether you are passionate or amateurs, the atmosphere of serenity that reigns will seduce you. On the outside, the red gravel area takes up the supposed layout of the church, while the wall all around the site represents the boundaries of the old abbey. A game booklet for children will be available free of charge at the reception. Do not miss also the workshops and readings offered by the House of Poetry located on the forecourt of the crypt (Saturday from 10h to 12h and from 14h to 17h, Sunday from 14h to 17h).
