The Old Castle was built at the end of the 11th century by the viscounts of Labourd on the site of the Roman castrum of Lapurdum dating from the 1st century. Initially, it was made of a hexagonal keep and it was in the 12th century that two building bodies were added.
In the 17th century, Vauban reorganized the defense of the Spanish border by building the ramparts and consolidating the Château-Vieux.
State prison during the Revolution, it currently houses the Mess Circle of the 1st RPIMA.
