Former episcopal palace whose construction was decided by Monsignor Usson de Bonnac and entrusted to the architect Leroy. The first stone was laid in 1775\. Seduced by the beauty and majesty of the place, Napoleon I decided to transfer the prefecture. He signed the imperial decree giving effect to this decision on February 28, 1809\. Work was immediately undertaken to restore the building, which had deteriorated since it was sealed in 1791\. It is on November 23, 1810 that the first Prefect, Christophe de Villeneuve-Bargemont, settles there. The building is influenced by Mansard. It has been written that its architecture was inspired by the Hotel Matignon built in 1720 by Jean de Courtonne under the regency. One finds indeed all the poncifs of the French distribution as they emerge from the hotels of Mansart and Vau.
