In den 1870er Jahren entstanden, wurde die Postkarte bald zu einem großartigen Kommunikationswerkzeug. Die Begeisterung für dieses banale kleine Stück Pappe ist umso größer, als in dieser Zeit die Alphabetisierung deutlich zunimmt und der Tourismus wächst. Eine Art E-Mail oder SMS der Vergangenheit, die Postkarte ist immer noch das Objekt, das die größte Anzahl von Verkaufsstellen in der Welt hat. Zubereitet vom romantischen Geschmack des 19. Jahrhunderts, bieten die Postkartenherausgeber einen malerischen Blick, der alte Denkmäler und Ruinen der Vergangenheit bevorzugt. In Valognes bieten die römischen Bäder von Alauna, die bereits zuvor durch zahlreiche Gravuren vertreten waren, ein Thema der Wahl. Auch die Kirche Saint-Malo mit ihrer «florentinischen» Kuppel, das Hotel de Beaumont und die ehemalige königliche Benediktinerabtei sind von den Fotografen inspiriert. Created in the 1870s, the postcard quickly became a formidable communication tool. The enthusiasm for this banal piece of cardboard is all the stronger as, during this period, literacy is clearly increasing and tourism is developing. Sort of Email or SMS of the past, the postcard remains today still the object that has the largest number of sales points in the world. Prepared by the romantic taste of the nineteenth century, the postcard publishers offer a picturesque look, favouring ancient monuments and the ruins of the past. In Valognes, the Roman baths of Alauna, already represented by numerous engravings, offer a choice subject. The Saint-Malo church and its «Florentine» dome, the Beaumont hotel and the former royal Benedictine abbey also inspire photographers. Beyond that, however, fairs and markets, street scenes and «Norman types», shops and crafts, as well as many other subjects, also arouse great interest. As a documentary tool as much as an artistic object, the postcard is thus an archaeological, social, economic, anthropological testimony…

L'entusiasmo per questo banale pezzetto di cartone si rivela tanto più forte in quanto, durante questo periodo, l'alfabetizzazione è in netto aumento e il turismo si sviluppa. Sorta di Email o di SMS del passato, la cartolina rimane ancora oggi l'oggetto che dispone del maggior numero di punti vendita nel mondo. Preparati dal gusto romantico del XIX secolo, gli editori di cartoline propongono uno sguardo pittoresco, privilegiando i monumenti antichi e le rovine del passato. A Valognes, le terme romane di Alauna, già rappresentate in precedenza da numerose incisioni, offrono un soggetto di scelta. La chiesa di Saint-Malo e la sua cupola «fiorentina», l'hôtel de Beaumont e l'antica abbazia benedettina reale alimentano anche l'ispirazione dei fotografi. Oltre a ciò, fiere e mercati, scene di strada e «tipi normanni», negozi e artigianato, come molti altri soggetti, suscitano anche un vivo interesse. Sorte d’Email ou de SMS du passé, la carte postale reste aujourd’hui encore l'objet qui dispose du plus grand nombre de points de vente dans le monde. Préparés par le goût romantique du XIXe siècle, les éditeurs de cartes postales proposent un regard pittoresque, privilégiant les monuments anciens et les ruines du passé. A Valognes, les thermes romains d’Alauna, déjà représentés auparavant par de nombreuses gravures, offrent un sujet de choix.
