Carrara city - Carrières souterraines
186 rue Paul Doumer 78420 Carrières-sur-Seine
Classified as an architectural heritage protection zone, the Underground Quarries extend over one hectare. It is one of the oldest deposits in the region. It is here that were extracted the blocks necessary for the realization of the columns of the abbey of Saint-Denis in the twelfth century as well as those, among others, of the castle of Marly. The great works of Paris carried out by Baron Haussmann required the use of stones cut into large blocks of 3 to 7 tons. They were transported by rail to the capital or, from 1880, by train from the freight station at Houilles-Carrières, which had a lifting gantry.
