Discover the backstage of the restoration of the Chapel of the Virgin at the Saint-Germain-des-Prés church!
Since June 2023, the restoration of the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés continues for a new phase of work that concerns the painted decorations of the chapel of the Virgin. These are two large paintings in grisaille (that is to say in shades of grey), L'Adoration des mages and La Présentation de l'enfant Jésus au Temple, made by François-Joseph Heim (1787-1865) between 1828 and 1830. These works are currently being restored.
The visit proposed on the occasion of the European Heritage Days is led by a restorer and offers you to go behind the scenes of the site in an exceptional way.

  • Meet in front of the main entrance of the church, 3 place Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

The thousand-year-old bell-tower-porch of the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, its Romanesque nave, its choir of the twelfth century, as well as its capitals that date in the history of religious architecture, make it an example of Parisian Romanesque architecture. The revival of sacred art in the 19th century is illustrated by Flandrin’s murals. Located at the entrance to the church, the Saint-Symphorien chapel, decorated by Pierre Buraglio, offers an example of integration of 20th century art alongside works from the past. Historical monument protected by Prosper Mérimée in 1862.
