Discover the history of the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale and its headquarters, the Hotel de l'Industrie.
On the occasion of the 2023 European Heritage Days, the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale is organising a guided tour of the Hotel de l'Industrie.
In the footsteps of Jean-Antoine Chaptal, Louis Pasteur, Gustave Eiffel, Marie Curie, Peugeot, come and discover this place steeped in history. It was in one of the rooms of the Hôtel de l'Industrie, for example, that the Lumière brothers made their first screening, the founding act of the film industry in 1895. The Hotel was also one of the places of the political, social, cultural, or simply festive life of the neighborhood and the left bank. Nowadays he perpetuates this tradition.

The Société d'encouragement pour l'industrie nationale is an association founded in 1801 by a group of scholars, senior officials and entrepreneurs, with the support of the three consuls Bonaparte, Cambacérès and Lebrun, to revive France’s economy. Recognized as a public utility in 1824, it aims to support the industrial development of France, to foster technological innovation and to promote the men who are its promoters. In the 19th century, it made a direct contribution to France’s economic development in areas ranging from the first railway networks to the creation of the first infrastructure for energy production and distribution. Its action was decisive in the field of patents and standardization. It was the precursor of ANVAR, INPI, OSEO and the National Testing Laboratory.
