Morgestraich by Clément Cogitore
In Morgestraich, the artist Clément Cogitore pays tribute to the Basel carnival, an event he attends during his childhood.
At four o'clock in the morning, as all the lights of the city go out, bands of musicians parade down the street among the crowd to the sound of pipeaus and drums. This particular moment differs from other carnivals by its contemplative, ironic and lugubrious dimension that would be rooted in the tradition of macabre dance and medieval processions against epidemics. Deploying out of time and space this procession that marks the passage from winter to spring and from death to life, the work of Clément Cogitore questions these secular rituals that connect the community in uncertain times.
