The Société des Moteurs SALMSON (S.M.S) was established in Billancourt in 1913. This geographical choice follows those of Esnault-Pelterie, inventor of the «broomstick» and father of the astronaut, the Farman brothers or Louis Renault for their respective companies. The first achievements were light, efficient and reliable aviation engines, hence their success.
