Synopsis: Rome in the splendor of summer. Tourists crowd on the Janiculum: a Japanese man collapses struck by so much beauty. Jep Gambardella – a handsome man with irresistible charm despite the first signs of old age – enjoys the worldliness of the city. It is of all the evenings and of all the parties, its spirit makes wonder and its sought after company. A successful journalist, an unrepentant seducer, he wrote a novel in his youth that earned him a literary prize and a reputation as a frustrated writer: he hides his dismay behind a cynical and disillusioned attitude that leads him to put a bitter lucid look on the world. On the terrace of his Roman apartment overlooking the Coliseum, he gives parties where the "human apparatus" is exposed – this is the title of his novel – and plays the comedy of nothingness. Back from everything, Jep sometimes dreams of writing again, crossed by the memories of a childhood love to which he clings, but will he succeed? Will he overcome his deep disgust with himself and others in a city whose blinding beauty has something paralyzing…
