In the past, Vertus was the centre of a Gallo-Roman region that was part of the Second Belgium. The name «Virtues» derives from the name of a cult rendered to a pagan divinity «Virotus» which symbolized courage. Then, the cult of Saint Martin (representing military courage) conveyed by Christianity replaced him and Vertus continued under the influence of the Diocese of Châlons. The current town hall is located in the place of the former town hall of Vertus.
