Chapelle de Seigne

The funeral chapel of Seigne is a unique architectural work in France, dating from the Renaissance period. This building, located on a former Renaissance cemetery, was classified as a Historic Monument in 1875\. Its carved decoration is of a very high quality and corresponds perfectly to what was done in the 1525 years, in the Loire Valley.
The origin of this chapel of the cemetery, in Bléré, was long ignored.
Documents belonging to the abbey of Villeloin delivered the answer “In the cemetery of the church of Bléré, outside the city, enclosed by small walls, is a chapel dedicated to Saint Jean Baptiste, the foundation of Monsieur Seigne, Escuyer, Lord of Bois-Pateau, of Bois-Ramé, Governor of Montrichard, son of Guillaume de Seigne." (Histoire des Anciens Comtes d'Anjou, Généalogie de Seigneurs de Bléré).
It was built in 1526 by Jehan de Seigne in memory of his father, Guillaume de Seigne, Treasurer General of the King’s artillery, Lord Boispateau and La Lande.
