This fortress, erected on a rocky promontory at the confluence of the Lizaine and the Allan, is attested around 985\. Residence of the counts since the eleventh century, it is the capital of the country of Montbéliard, integral part of the Germanic empire. In 1397, she returned by marriage to the Württemberg family who kept her until 1793\.
