Mathilde, Blanche, Marguerite and the others: discover women of power in the thirteenth century

On August 1, 1223, Mathilde de Courtenay, countess of Auxerre, Nevers and Tonnerre, freed her bourgeois from Auxerre. A woman in power in the 13th century, is that exceptional? No, Mathilde’s case is not isolated, other women have in their hands a political, seigneurial or religious power. Through the presentation of original sealed charters, the Departmental Archives invite you to discover portraits of these women.

Instituted under Revolution (law of 5 brumaire the year V) to receive papers acquired in the Republic (the national property(goods), deleted(eliminated) administrations) and to collect documents emanating from new administrations, departmental archives assure(insure) the preservation of documents produced by different administrations and establishments which followed one another on the territory of the department. They assume(accept) five missions so: collect the archive documents of administrations and utility having their seat(siege) in the department, as well as certain documents of private origin; keep(preserve) these documents in appropriated premises(places); list(classify) them and draught instruments of research(search) which allow to the public to have access there; announce archives to the public, respecting the lawful(legal) deadlines(extensions) of communicability, and orientate researches(searches); assure(insure) the cultural promotion(valuation) of bottoms by the organisation of exhibitions(exposures) or of actions(shares) in favour of the widest public.
