The Departmental Archives preserve a heritage treasure covering more than twelve centuries of history, the oldest act being a diploma of Louis the Pious dated 819. Each document tells a story, revealing details about the periods of the past, the individual and collective destinies of the humble as well as the powerful. Presented in the reading room, a selection of documents will show the astonishing variety of these archives of the past.

Instituted under Revolution (law of 5 brumaire the year V) to receive papers acquired in the Republic (the national property(goods), deleted(eliminated) administrations) and to collect documents emanating from new administrations, departmental archives assure(insure) the preservation of documents produced by different administrations and establishments which followed one another on the territory of the department. They assume(accept) five missions so: collect the archive documents of administrations and utility having their seat(siege) in the department, as well as certain documents of private origin; keep(preserve) these documents in appropriated premises(places); list(classify) them and draught instruments of research(search) which allow to the public to have access there; announce archives to the public, respecting the lawful(legal) deadlines(extensions) of communicability, and orientate researches(searches); assure(insure) the cultural promotion(valuation) of bottoms by the organisation of exhibitions(exposures) or of actions(shares) in favour of the widest public.
