In 1635, Isabeau de l'Espine, heiress of the Aulan fief, married François-Marie de Suarez and brought him the castle as a dowry. Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Toulourenc valley, the Aulan castle has undergone many transformations since the 12th century. Roughed up during the Revolution, the castle was completely redesigned in a Viollet-Le-Duc style in the second half of the 19th century by the Marquis Arthur de Suarez d'Aulan. The latter, who was in love with this land, decided to build a home there in keeping with his passion. Mayor of Aulan, general councillor of the Drôme, deputy of the Drôme and squire at the court of Napoleon III, he was particularly interested in agricultural issues. It was he who introduced the Austrian black pine to reforest the region. It is this same love for this place that leads his grandson Count Charles de Suarez d'Aulan to take over this house. Since 1958, Aulan Castle is the only private residence of the Baronnies open to visitors. Accompanied by a guide for 45 minutes, you will discover through lounges, dining rooms, bedrooms, an interior inhabited, decorated with multiple objects, relating to the Second Empire and the history of the family. Today, it is still the property of their descendants, it is a family gathering place.
