Owners of Montbrien, the Camus family had a quality residence built in the 19th century in the town of Montmarault. The central main building, rectangular in plan, is flanked by two wings at right angles. One of the wings receives, at the interior angle with the house, a pavilion in the shape of a square tower, whose four-sided roof dominates the construction. A porch, a terrace with balusters and skylights enliven the roof and the facade.
Claude Marc Camus, received doctor of medicine in 1850, was renowned for bone surgery. His son-in-law Marcel Vacher, agricultural engineer, succeeded him in the castle. He was mayor of Montmarault from 1885 to 1919, general councilor from 1895 to 1901 and deputy from 1893 to 1902.
Interesting to note that the Château de Montmarault (Château Camus) served from 1940 to 1944 as the headquarters of group 39 (Le Foucaud) of youth camps.
