A village of Celtic origin that was called Athogis under the Romans. This is why the inhabitants of Thueyts are now called Athogians.
Sheltered to the north by the Gravenne volcano, Thueyts is built on a lava lake from the Prat volcano that gives it this particular relief. To find its way back, the Ardèche River has dug the magnificent gorges of the Giant’s Causeway that can be discovered by a remarkable route by visiting the sites of the Mouth of Hell, the Devil’s Bridge, the King’s Ladder or the Queen’s Ladder.
The village developed at the beginning of the second millennium around its priory linked to the Abbey Saint Chaffre of Monastier-sur-Gazeille (Haute-Loire). He enjoyed a good period of prosperity from the Renaissance. All along the streets of the old town, remarkable testimonies such as the Château de Blou, the Pouget Tower and several mansions remain from this period.
During these different periods, its activity was dominated by trade, crafts, then arboriculture, silkworm breeding and textile industry. The activity of Thueyts today is mainly based on tourism and health.
